Keyboard test: do all your keys work?

Press every key on your keyboard: each key you press turns green on the picture. You'll see at once which keys don't respond, which ones type twice, and how many keys work at the same time.

Some keys (Fn, Windows + L, Ctrl + W, Alt + F4, media keys) are handled by your computer first and can't be tested in a browser.

How to test your keyboard

Just start typing. Every key you press lights up and stays green, and the counter shows how many keys you've tested. Keys that stay grey after you press them may be broken, or may not send a signal to the browser (like Fn).

Choose “US layout (ANSI)” or “European layout (ISO)” to match your keyboard's shape. In Chrome and Edge, the letters on the picture follow your real layout, such as QWERTZ or AZERTY.

Double-typing and keys at once

A worn key sometimes sends two presses for one touch, known as key chatter. The test flags keys that fire again within 50 ms of being released, which is too fast for a human finger.

“Keys at once” shows the most keys held down together. Gaming keyboards often handle 6 keys or more (sometimes all of them, called N-key rollover); some office keyboards only handle 2 or 3 in certain combinations, which can block movement keys in games.

Keys that can't be tested in a browser

Your computer handles some keys before the browser sees them: Fn, media and brightness keys, Windows + L, Ctrl + W and Alt + F4. Print Screen often only reports when it's released. On a Mac, the Command key may hide other keys you press while holding it.

Tick “Capture Tab and system keys too” to test Tab and the function keys without the browser reacting to them. Untick it again to move around the page with Tab.

Questions & answers

Why doesn't the Fn key light up?

Fn is handled inside the keyboard itself and never reaches the browser, so no website can test it.

A key types twice. What can I do?

Clean under the keycap with compressed air. On mechanical keyboards the switch may need replacing; some keyboards also have a debounce setting in their software.

How do I test a laptop keyboard?

The same way: press every key. Laptop keyboards have no number pad, so ignore that part of the picture.

Does it work with phone keyboards?

No. On-screen keyboards don't send real key codes. Connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard to test it.

What do key, code and keyCode mean?

key is the character typed, code is the physical position on the keyboard, and keyCode is an older number some programs still use.
