How to test your webcam
Press “Start camera test” and click Allow. Your picture appears with the resolution (for example 1280 × 720), the measured frame rate, the aspect ratio and the megapixels. A green message confirms that your camera works; if the picture is black or very dark, the test tells you.
Use the Camera list to switch between a built-in and an external camera, and the Quality list to ask for 720p, 1080p or 4K. Your camera then picks the closest size it supports, so you see what it can really do.
Camera not working? Check these first
First, allow access: click the camera icon in the address bar. A black picture usually means a privacy shutter, a sticker over the lens, or a camera switched off with a key on the laptop. An error saying the device is busy means another app is using the camera: close video call apps and try again.
On Windows, check Settings → Privacy → Camera; on a Mac, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. External cameras: try another USB port directly on the computer.
What resolution and frame rate do I need?
720p at 30 frames per second is enough for most video calls; 1080p looks sharper when the app supports it. A frame rate well below 30 often means poor lighting: many webcams slow down in the dark to collect more light.
Good light from the front, a clean lens and a plain background improve your picture more than a higher resolution.
Questions & answers
Is my video recorded or uploaded?
No. The picture is shown only on your screen. A photo is saved straight to your device; nothing is sent to us.
Why is my picture mirrored?
Mirror image is on by default because it feels natural, like a mirror. Untick it to see what others see in a call.
Why is my frame rate low?
Low light is the most common reason. Turn on a lamp in front of you; also close apps that use a lot of processing power.
Can I test my phone's camera?
Yes. Open the page in your phone's browser, allow the camera, and use the Camera list to switch between front and back cameras.
