How the spacebar test works

Pick a test length and press the spacebar to start: the timer begins with your first press. Every press while the time runs is counted, and your presses per second update live. When the time is up you see your score, your level and your personal best.

Your keyboard sends a stream of repeated presses when you hold a key down. The test ignores those, so the only way to a good score is real tapping.

What is a good spacebar score?

Most people manage 5 to 7 presses per second. With practice, 8 to 10 is a strong result. Using two thumbs in turns is allowed and is often faster than one.

The level names are the same as on every test here: Turtle, Cat, Rabbit, Cheetah, Falcon and Lightning. Scores above 20 per second are never saved, because no human keeps that pace.

Why test your spacebar?

Fast spacebar tapping matters in rhythm games, platform games where you jump a lot, and some typing games. The test is also a quick check that a sticky or worn spacebar still registers every press: if your count is much lower than your tapping, the key may be missing presses.

Spacebar test or CPS test: which one?

The CPS test measures clicks with a mouse button; this test measures presses on a keyboard key. Many people are faster on the spacebar because it's wider and two thumbs can share it, while others are quicker with a light mouse switch. Try both and compare your levels.

Keyboards matter too: low-profile and light linear switches usually give the fastest results, while heavy or mushy keys slow you down. If you use a laptop, the spacebar travel is short, which can help with speed but makes it easier to miss a press.

Questions & answers

Does holding the spacebar count?

No. Held keys send automatic repeats, and the test ignores them. Only real presses count.

Can I use two hands?

Yes. Alternating thumbs or fingers is allowed and usually faster.

Why does the page not scroll when I press Space?

On this page the spacebar is used for the test, so it doesn't scroll the page while the test is on screen.

Does it work on a phone?

Only with a connected keyboard. On-screen keyboards don't send spacebar presses to the test.
